Fatal Counterattack - Chapter 7: Real Murderer
“If I find out that you’re using me or you have anything to do with this case, things won’t end too well for you!”
Cheng Ze stared coldly at Zhang Zichen.
“Well, I wouldn’t be stupid enough to give myself out…”
“Huh! But I don’t think you’ll know who the murderer is either!”
“All the answers are right there yet you didn’t pay any attention. All I did was observe my surroundings and applied some logic, it’s not that hard.”
“It’s already one-eighteen. If you keep talking about this useless stuff, I’m afraid I might not get back in time before seven.”
Cheng Ze glanced at the clock on the wall in front of him and said to Zhang Zichen very impatiently.
“Okay fine. The murderer is about one point seven five meters tall, thin but strong, left-handed, has an injury on his left foot, a wound on his left ankle, and a two-inch scar on the left side of his face. With this information, I believe it’s not hard for you to find who the murderer is.”
Cheng Ze looked at Zhang Zichen with doubt. Regardless of the location of the murder, the victim, the process, or the motive, everything was uncertain and still under investigation. It seemed like series of dots that had no relation with each other at all.
But no matter how weird the case was, it probably still wasn’t as weird as Zhang Zichen who was sitting right in front of him. This person seemed to know everything. He was only a bit over twenty yet was so calm about everything. Seeing the murder, lying beside the corpse, entering the police station, and even bargaining with the police officer. All these things made the situation seem really unrealistic… but… where was the problem?
“If what you said is true, then I have every reason to suspect that you are behind this case after all.”
Cheng Ze looked at Zhang Zichen and tried to solve the ball of mystery in his head.
“It doesn’t matter if what I said is true or not. You’ll know everything when you bring the murderer back.”
Cheng Ze studied Zhang Zichen’s calm face and unbuttoned the top button of his shirt.
“Where is the person now?”
“Should be in Happy World. If I’m right, he should be in one of the VIP rooms on the top of Happy World.”
“Oh? Are you saying he’s one of Ding Minyi’s men?”
“Yup.”
“Looks like I really did underestimate you; you know quite a lot.”
Hearing what Zhang Zichen had said, Cheng Ze sneered again. It seemed that this murder case was absolutely inseparable from this mysterious person sitting in front of him.
“Huh? I’m just a homeless person on the streets, is it weird that I know this stuff? Although I’m poor, I do have some specialties. Without some unique abilities and profession, how can I survive on the streets for so long?”
Zhang Zichen’s words suddenly made Cheng Ze laugh.
“Ridiculous! If you were a murderer, would you continue to live your normal life? I’m afraid any normal person would be trying to run away from the police.”
“That’s because he knows that you police do not do your job very well.”
He seemed to have already guessed what Cheng Ze would say. Zhang Zichen ignored Cheng Ze’s laugh and just casually replied.
“What did you say!!!”
“You heard it. If you act quickly, he’s probably still there. If you’re late, I’m afraid he won’t be there anymore.”
Cheng Ze tried to calm his feeling of beating Zhang Zichen up and picked up his hat. He gritted his teeth and gave Zhang Zichen a cold glance before leaving the room.
“You wait here!”
“Wait, don’t tell me you’re planning to just go like this?” Zhang Zichen raised his hand and stopped Cheng Ze who was about to leave.
“I don’t need you to teach me what to do.”
“No, no. Under normal circumstances, I would never question what a person who graduated from a police school should do. But see the problem is we’re on a time crunch. Why don’t we do this together? Teamwork? Hehe.” Zhang Zichen chuckled as he said towards Cheng Ze.
“Ugh, what is it now?”
Cheng Ze already lost his temper by Zhang Zichen’s childish behavior as he squeezed the words out of his mouth.
“If I were you…”
Zhang Zichen said as he continued to look at Cheng Ze with a smiley face. Although Cheng Ze didn’t look that angry anymore, he still just gave Zhang Zichen a cold sneer before leaving the room.
After Cheng Ze disappeared from the door, Zhang Zichen’s smile immediately turned into a frown. Everything happened too quickly.
In the beginning, I’m still watching the show with Ju. Then while we were looking for money, one of them suddenly got up. I and Ju tried to get away, but then someone was killed and I ended up in the police station.
Although this series of events didn’t have anything too special, all of this made Zhang Zichen feel very comfortable. It was as if you were holding several small beads in your hand. But no matter how hard you tried, you couldn’t string them together, let alone wear them.
All these suspicious events seemed to have woven a giant net, trapping Zhang Zichen firmly in the middle. No matter how clever he was, how hard he tried, he couldn’t get away from the net strangling him.
Zhang Zichen closed his eyes and rubbed the bridge of his nose. If something was very complicated, then it was best to start with what one knew. This was the method Zhang Zichen often used.
First, when I was going through them one by one after Ju, I was straightening their collar and noticed that each of them had the letters “DB” on them. All of these men in suits wore the exact same uniform and looked extremely well trained. In addition to their equal-length metal sticks in hand, the only group big enough in SJZ City is none other than the Ding’s men, which works for Ding Minyi at Happy World.
Next, when I was organizing their shirts, I paid attention to all of their faces. The location of the person who disappeared in the end was the one who had a scar on his left face. Then, while Cheng Ze was chasing me and found the corpse, I checked the footprints beside the corpse. The pattern was the same as the leather shoes from the men in suits. So the murderer must be the man who was unconscious on the floor and then woke up. Finally, I got trapped here in the police station. But although I’m here, everything is pretty much still under my control. At least I have the upper hand right now.
After cleaning up his thoughts, Zhang Zichen shook his head. He couldn’t figure out the rest anymore. Either way, he was just a nobody from the streets. After leaving this police station, I’ll just keep in mind to stay away from these places. Then he looked up at the clock behind him. It was already ten past two.
