Kaleidoscope of Death - Chapter 64.3: Set Up
Chapter 64.3: Set Up
The room looked like it hasn’t been used for a very long time. Since there were no beds with only bookshelves and desks, it should have been an office or something before.
What attracted Lin Qiushi was that there were still books on these bookshelves.
The three walked into the room.
Lin Qiushi pulled out a book from a bookshelf and found out that it was about pathology. In fact, most of the books on the shelves were related to the treatment of patients, but back then, there were many big misunderstandings about medicine. Lin Qiushi remembered that there were some books about bloodletting treatments and other techniques that would sound very absurd nowadays.
“Fuck, what’s this!” Feng Yongle was originally looking through the cabinet when he suddenly took a few steps back as if he was frightened by something.
Lin Qiushi leaned over and saw that the drawer that was pulled open had a dried-up body inside. The body was very small and looked like it belonged to a pre-term baby.
“What the hell is it doing here?” continued Feng Yongle, “And didn’t the hint say… the abortion failed?”
Abortion failure was not a very serious issue nowadays, the worst that could happen would be curettage, but back then, to a sanatorium with very limited treatment professions, it was very crucial. On top of that, this child was an illegitimate child.
“The abortion did fail,” said Ruan Nanzhu after observing, “This baby’s body is missing a part.”
Feng Yongle smiled bitterly, “I’m quite impressed by your courage.”
Ruan Nanzhu didn’t reply. Just when Lin Qiushi thought that he wouldn’t be saying anything, he suddenly said, “This body is placed here recently.”
“What?” Feng Yongle was taken back.
“There’s no dust around,” continued Ruan Nanzhu, “… it’s very clean.”
Everything in this room was covered with dust, except for here. There was no dust on the baby’s skeleton, and instead, it was very clean, as if someone carefully placed it here.
Lin Qiushi walked around the place where the baby’s skeletons were placed and noticed a locked cabinet under the drawer. He waved to Ruan Nanzhu and pointed towards it.
Ruan Nanzhu squatted down and also opened the cabinet with a hairpin.
After the cabinet was opened, a pair of shoeboxes appeared. Ruan Nanzhu glanced at Lin Qiushi and reached out to open the lid. Inside the shoebox was a pair of red high heels —— the same one they say in the corridor last night.
The moment they opened the shoe box, Lin Qiushi suddenly heard a baby’s cry. The cry came from the drawer above…
“Waah, waah,” The sound came from the baby as it opened its eyes. Its hands and feet also began to move.
As it tried to crawl out of the drawer, Ruan Nanzhu quickly reacted and pushed the drawer back.
“Let’s go,” said Ruan Nanzhu.
The three of them quickly turned around and ran, and didn’t forget to reclose the big lock before leaving.
As soon as they left the room, the baby’s cry stopped.
A thin layer of cold sweat formed on Feng Yongle’s head. He swallowed his spit and said, “That kid, could he have something to do with the key?”
“Not sure,” replied Ruan Nanzhu, “but it can be certain that it has something to do with the red shoes.”
The three of them talked as they walked back to their room.
Due to the accident last night, before entering the door, Lin Qiushi specifically took notice of their room number. After making sure it didn’t turn to 502, they entered.
However, although their room number didn’t turn into 502, the one beside theirs did. Lin Qiushi wanted to go and warn them but was held back by Ruan Nanzhu. “It’s Jiang Yingrui’s room.”
Lin Qiushi stopped.
“Since he likes you so much and even gave me some chocolate,” said Ruan Nanzhu with a chuckle, “Shouldn’t we give something back in return?”
Lin Qiushi nodded, signaling that he understood.
Jiang Yingrui’s chocolate was definitely up to no good. Lin Qiushi knew very well that he didn’t give it to Ruan Nanzhu just because the breakfast didn’t taste good enough.
Feng Yongle didn’t really care either. After all, everyone else in the group was a competitor. It wouldn’t matter if one died.
They went back to the room and discussed the results of today’s findings.
While they were talking, Lin Qiushi heard the faint footsteps coming from their door. The sound was very soft, and if it wasn’t for Lin Qiushi’s extraordinary hearing, he would have missed it too.
At first, Lin Qiushi thought that it was going to be like what happened last night, the sound of high heels running, but after the footsteps stopped, he heard a little noise from the door, something like paper and wood rubbing.
Lin Qiushi lifted up his hand, interrupting the discussion between Ruan Nanzhu and Feng Yongle, and pointed towards the door.
Ruan Nanzhu understood, stood up, and walked there to open the door.
As the door opened, a little girl with an embarrassed expression appeared. Lin Qiushi remembered her name; she was Xue Zhiyun, who tried to join their team but was rejected by Ruan Nanzhu.
“What do you want?” asked Ruan Nanzhu coldly.
“No…nothing,” Xue Zhiyun’s expression was a little worried, “I… I just wanted to come by and say hello.”
Ruan Nanzhu raised his head and looked at the front of their door. The number 406 that was originally on the door was taken off, which was currently behind held by Xue Zhiyun. Her other hand was hidden behind her, and her whole body was trembling slightly.
“What’s in your hand?” asked Ruan Nanzhu quietly.
Xue Zhiyun’s body started to tremble more. The tone of the person in front of him wasn’t heavy, and his eyes didn’t look to be angry either, but she was terrified, and goosebumps appeared all over her back.
“What’s in your hand?” asked Ruan Nanzhu again.
Lin Qiushi knew that he was about to piss off. Before Ruan Nanzhu did though, he quickly snatched the thing from the hand behind Xue Zhiyun’s back.
It was a room number plate. The number 502 on it was so catchy that it could make a person’s eye hurt.
Ruan Nanzhu saw the number plate and started laughing. He reached out, grabbed Xue Zhiyun’s hair, and lifted her up in front of his face. “Xue Zhiyun, right? I’ll remember you, no, I’ll remember you guys.”
Xue Zhiyun was still trembling in shock as she apologized to Ruan Nanzhu in a crying voice.
Ruan Nanzhu released the hand holding Xue Zhiyun and took the room plate from Lin Qiushi. His tone was incredibly calm, like the sea right before a storm, “I suggest you guys sleep separately tonight. In fact, it’s best for you to change a room.” He smiled, “After all, who knows when this number plate would end up on your door?”
Upon hearing this, Xue Zhiyun burst into tears.
And Ruan Nanzhu closed the door without any mercy.
Lin Qiushi looked at the closed door and frowned: Why do they have to do this? Didn’t you say that that murder would result in revenge?
Ruan Nanzhu said calmly, “Of course there’ll be revenge, but the person who got killed must at least know how he died and who killed him.”
If one died without even knowing, how could one seek revenge?
