Her Little Dimples - Chapter 8: What Do You Like?
“Little friend, what are you thinking about? Turned around already,” Fu Xueli interrupted Xu You’s blank mind.
Xu You looked away from the water bottle and started to recover. Then she asked, “Huh? What happened?”
“Look,” Fu Xueli motioned her to look toward the podium, “The teacher said group discussion, front and back rows.”
What?
She didn’t hear anything that the teacher just said.
Xu you looked up and saw a line of white chalk written in the middle of the blackboard:
Write down the five things that you like to do the most in English. I’ll choose students to read after.
Fu Xueli had already turned around. Seeing that Xu You still didn’t move, she said impatiently, “Honey, hurry up please, we need you. This old woman likes to pick on people like us.”
It just so happened that the teacher came in from outside the classroom after getting some water. She said as she walked in, “Everyone hurry up, ten minutes left.”
Before she could even think more, Xu You quickly took out a pen and a piece of paper and turned around.
The two boys in the back were chatting, but at this moment, they stopped together and looked toward Xu You.
She had her head lowered slightly and was looking at the scratch paper. She held the pen and whispered, “You speak, I’ll translate.”
The classroom was full of lively conversations, yet their area seemed extremely quiet.
After replying to a message, Fu Xueli placed her phone away. When she looked up, she realized that the atmosphere was a little awkward.
“What’s the matter?” she asked inexplicably.
“Uh…” Song Yifan hesitated, “I don’t know.”
He felt a little guilty because his brother just bullied the little girl.
As for why Xie Ci didn’t say anything… he didn’t know.
A few seconds later.
Xu You’s fingers were slightly curled and slid unconsciously on the paper. Song Yifan’s voice suddenly sounded beside her hear, “Why aren’t you guys saying anything? Fine, I’ll go first. Give me a second to think about it.”
After speaking, he frowned and squinted at the sky, as if he was thinking hard.
“Hurry up,” Fu Xueli rested her head on her hand and said boringly, “What do you have to think about? For a person like you, what else do you do other than eat and sleep?”
“Hey, Big Pear1The Li in Fu Xueli means pear in Chinese, that’s why his classmates call her pear., you can’t say that. I’m also a man with dreams who wants to live a meaningful life, okay?”
Fu Xuelie crumbled a piece of paper into a ball and threw it at Song Yifan, “I don’t like to be called Big Pear, fuck you.”
“And,” she was sitting diagonally from Song Yifan and she got up to hit him, “except for dating girls, I don’t know what you mean by a meaningful life.”
Song Yifan straightened his back and said righteously, “To be honest, apart from the fact that my academic performance is bad——”
“Wait, it’s not just bad, it’s terrible,” interrupted Fu Xueli.
Hearing that, Xu You started to laugh.
After finally seeing the new classmate pulling up a smile, Song Yifan was finally relieved, “Okay now, I won’t argue with you anymore. I need to learn like our classmate Xu.”
Then he deliberately ignored his tablemate, who gave him a cold glance because of this sentence.
As they were arguing, Xu You had already written down her answers on her paper.
She pressed the ballpoint pen and nodded to Song Yifan, “You can start now.”
“Can I say anything? You’ll know how to translate it?”
Xu You was taken back for a second, “You can say it first, I’m not sure if I know how to translate everything.”
“Okay…” said Song Yifan as he thought, “I like to play basketball, sleep, and play games…”2This might be a bit confusing here. So SYF is speaking Chinese, which I translated to English for you guys to understand. But they’re in English class right now, so XY would also be translating what he says into English for him. For you to better understand, whatever they’re saying in Chinese, I’ll use double-quotes. Whatever they’re saying in English or writing down in English, I’ll put it in single quotes.
As Xu You listened, she carefully started to translate on the draft paper:
‘Play basketball, sleep, play games…’
Fu Xueli on the side couldn’t stand it anymore. She reached out her hand to interrupt, “Stop, stop, stop. Please don’t say these, otherwise, you’ll be embarrassing yourself when you get called.”
“What’s wrong?” Song Yifan was a bit angry.
Fu Xueli turned her head to look for Xie Ci’s agreement, “A Ci, don’t you think he’s an idiot?”
Xie Ci didn’t reply. The corners of his mouth just twitched slightly.
As Xu You wrote, she said to them, “Is there anything else? If not I’ll turn around now.”
“Wait,” the person who hadn’t made a sound for a long time finally spoke.
He raised the corners of his mouth and said in a long tone, “I——”
Hurry up…
Said Xu You to herself in her head.
Xie Ci didn’t continue and she didn’t say anything either. So she just sat there with her pen and waited quietly.
His wrist was at the edge of the table and his fingers were flipping the black phone on his desk. His eyes, however, were looking toward her.
She was quietly lying on the table, which made her look like an extremely well-behaved and cute white rabbit.
Song Yifan looked at Xu You then at Xie Ci. Suddenly, he felt that something was wrong.
After a while, Xie Ci’s lazy voice came.
“Let me think about it.”
Xie Ci paused for a while as if he was trying to think.
Xu You glanced at her watch. There were three minutes left. She sat up and was ready to write.
“I don’t think I like anything, what should I do?”
Song Yifan laughed and punched him in the chest, “What do you mean, it’s so easy. Xu You, write ‘women’ for him.”
“The fuck? Boring,” Fu Xueli interrupted angrily and turned around.
Xu You’s straight face didn’t respond at all to their joking. She quickly wrote down on the paper ‘nothing’, and placed it on his table. Then, she was about to turn around.
“Oh wait, I remember now,” Xie Ci raised an eyebrow and stopped Xu You.
She slowly looked up to look at him.
“What else?” she asked softly.
Why is this guy so troublesome…
“Don’t you know?” he asked back.
Xu You was silent and then frowned after a few seconds, “How would I know.”
Xie Ci smiled, “You sure?”
His voice sounded enigmatic, but Xu You didn’t want to spend the effort to think about it.
The moment she turned around, she felt a sudden rush of heat beside her ear.
Xie Ci had already got up, placed his hands on the table, and was leaning to right beside Xu You’s head. His black pupils were looking at her as he whispered.
Xu You’s body froze like a rock.
Xie Ci returned to his seat and rested his head on his elbows. He looked at Xu You’s blushing face and started to smile.
Suddenly, he felt that someone was looking at him, and his eyes moved.
“Bro,” Song Yifan leaned over and said with a complex expression, “Since when did you…”
“What?”
“Like to tease little girls so much.”
Xie Ci glanced at him and asked faintly, “Do you have a problem?”
“Hehe, how would I dare…”
After a while…
“No, I just think,” Song Yifan couldn’t help it and leaned over again as he whispered, “I just think that you changed or something, what’s the matter between you and the new classmate? What do you think?”
As soon as he finished, his calf got harshly kicked. Song Yifan made a quiet painful noise and immediately shut his mouth.
Xu You wiped the sweat from her forehead with the back of her hand.
She looked down and quickly scribbled a sentence on the scratch paper. And then she tore the paper off and placed it on the table of the boy behind her.
In the class, the English teacher stood on the podium and everyone gradually became quiet.
She cleared her throat, took the lesson plan, and asked, “Is everyone done discussing?”
No one replied.
Mrs. Zhang looked around, raised her chin, and then pointed to group four, “Xie Ci, where did you go last period? You’re getting more and more out of control. Here, you answer the question.”
Xu You bit her lip.
The person behind her casually stood up as the foots of the chair rubbed against the ground.
Seeing that he was not speaking, Mrs. Zhang glanced at him and said mercilessly, “If you can’t answer you’ll have to stand for the rest of class.”
Xie Ci leaned lazily against the wall and used two fingers to pick up the piece of white scratch paper on his desk.
In the quiet classroom, Xie Ci read the sentence written on his paper slowly in extremely poor English:
——”‘I love to give sb a glass of hot water.'”
Mrs. Zhang listened and then thought to herself. Then, she asked confusingly, “You like to help others get water?”
