The Golden Age - Chapter 64: Quick Retreat
The assassin ran from the back door and sprinted in the night like a lone wolf. He ran across several streets in one breath and sneaked into a dark alley before stopping.
Short of breath, the assassin held the fish-shaped dagger in his hands and tried to calm himself down.
This assassin was none other than Qin Xiao.
Qin Xiao followed Meng Zimo all the way to Unlimited Happiness. After seeing him flipping over the wall and going inside, Qin Xiao was a bit puzzled.
He obviously was not going in for fun.
Meng Zimo must’ve had a purpose, so Qin Xiao flipped over the wall too, trying to figure out what Meng Zimo was doing. On top of that, if Meng Zimo needed help, he could lend him a hand.
Under the help of Mu Yeji, he had already successfully reached level two. Although it was not even close to those who were real cultivators, he was already way beyond ordinary people.
When he came into the backyard over the wall, it would have taken a lot of effort if it was him before. But now all he has to do is do a big jump, and he could get his hands on top of the wall. With a push, he could easily get to the other side. He squatted on top of the wall looking at Meng Zimo’s actions. After seeing him disappear next to the stairs, Qin Xiao jumped down and followed him in.
The building was dead silent as he quietly followed Meng Zimo onto the second floor. He saw Meng Zimo opening a door and went inside it. Qin Xiao was even more confused as he saw that, wondering what Meng Zimo was up to in someone else’s room.
He wanted to wait for him near the stairs but suddenly saw a few people coming out of the hallway. The others didn’t get to see him because he had his secret blood pill. With one look, he could tell that the person there was the young master of the Manor of the Marquess, Zhen Yujiang.
Zhen Yujiang was focused on Meng Zimo and did not notice Qin Xiao who followed him in.
After seeing Zhen Yujiang, Qin Xiao knew something bad was about to happen. He quickly hid underneath the stairs and secretly watched what was happening. Soon, he heard sounds coming from the room and a bunch of people holding torches and swords rushed out.
It’s a trap! Qin Xiao finally figured what was going on.
They must’ve known that Meng Zimo would’ve come and made an ambush.
Qin Xiao, who was currently hiding under the stairs, was extremely worried.
What was worse was that Zhen Yujiang and Lang Shenshui were also standing next to the stairs talking. He and they were only a piece of wood away.
Meng Zimo killed his way out of the main building and then fell onto the first floor. Qin Xiao knew better than to charge out and help Meng Zimo as it would just end up killing both of them. He stayed put and watched.
Since he was right next to them, he also heard every single word of the conversation between Zhen Yujiang and Lang Shenshui.
Tonight’s trap seemed like it was targeted toward Meng Zimo, but their final goal was actually the Manor of the Governor and Han Yunong.
Zhen Yujiang didn’t care whether Meng Zimo was dead or alive. As long as he got captured, then it would be the biggest threat for the Manor of the Governor.
Qin Xiao knew that if he rushed out and went to help Meng Zimo, he wouldn’t stand a chance against this army of swordsmen and guards.
He was only a level two. If he were to have a one-on-one fight with one of the swordsmen, then maybe he could win. But due to the fact that there were so many of them, him going out would basically be committing suicide.
Even if Meng Zimo was caught, he had already ended his relationship with the Manor of the Governor. Although he could still be used against Han Yunong, it couldn’t be that bad.
But Qin Xiao, on the other hand, was still a member of the government. If he fell into the hands of these people, it would be much worse.
He had no other choice but to wait. He saw Meng Zimo’s wound and injuries, yet couldn’t do anything to help.
When the swordsmen all left to chase Meng Zimo, not only was Qin Xiao happy to see that he went out alive, he was also excited that he was now presented with the perfect opportunity.
Meng Zimo’s purpose tonight was to seek revenge for the Zheng Family.
He must be very sad after failing.
Qin Xiao was just as sorry for Butcher Zheng as Meng Zimo was. After seeing that Meng Zimo’s plan failed and a perfect opportunity appeared before his eyes, he was determined to do something. Meng Zimo saved him before, and now that his plan failed, Qin Xiao knew that it was now his duty to fulfill what Meng Zimo wanted to do.
Of course, Zhen Yujiang and Lang Shenshui would have never even imagined that after Meng Zimo escaped, there would be a Qin Xiao nearby.
After Qin Xiao made up his mind, he quickly calmed down and walked out from beneath the stairs.
He sneaked up to the two of them, and before they realized him, he charged at them while holding the fish-shaped dagger from Hong Ye. He aimed at Lang Shenshui’s neck and sliced it open.
One stab and he was dead.
Qin Xiao quickly pulled out the dagger and went for his next target: Zhen Yujiang.
Zhen Yujiang had caused so much trouble for the Manor of the Governor. On top of that, the statue incident last time had nearly cost both his and Meng Zimo’s life. What was more, was that he gave Lang Shenshui permission to kill Butcher Zheng’s family.
The dog was dead, its owner must not be kept alive.
It was just that Zhen Yujiang was a bit faster than Lang Shenshui. And since Lang Shenshui died already, Zhen Yujiang was a bit more prepared.
Although he cut off Zhen Yujiang’s hand and made a deep cut on his face, he was still alive.Â
Qin Xiao took a deep breath in the alley and found his hands shaking slightly.
He wasn’t sure whether it was because he was afraid or it was just the natural reaction after killing someone.
After all, this was the first time he had killed.
When he stabbed, all he had thought of was getting rid of the two good-for-nothings and had not bothered to think about anything else. But as he pictured the scene of him stabbing Lang Shenshui’s throat with the fish-shaped dagger, he felt his heart beating faster, his body still slightly shook.
He took a few more deep breaths, trying to calm himself down.
He hated himself for not being strong enough. He hated himself for not being able to kill Zhen Yujiang. He hated himself for not being able to get rid of such a terrible person for the whole Zhen County.
But he also knew that Lang Shenshui’s death and Zhen Yujiang’s severe injuries were the biggest events that ever happened in Gui City for many years. The Marquess wouldn’t sit still and do nothing.
Now, he was more worried about how to deal with the Zhen Family if they were to do something about it.
One thing that he was sure of was that after all, the Manor of the Governor represents the Imperial Court. Without proper evidence, all they could do was to anger the Imperial Court. If the Emperor would get angry because of that, then the Marquess must be prepared for the consequences too.
The Empire’s attention had been towards the south over these years, after all, they have twenty thousand troops settled at the Northern Manor of the Jia Yu Pass under the command of General Hei Yu.
That year when General Hei Yu captured the Wutuo’s King, he was immediately promoted and received huge sums of rewards after he returned. Now he controlled the troops at the Northern Manor.
The Imperial Court claimed that the troops were there to defend against the Tusun people, because after all, during that year when the Tusun people came to take advantage of the war the Tang Empire was in, they were terribly defeated. The Tusun people were afraid of the Tang Empire ever since.
Everyone basically knew that the troops at the Northern Manor were mainly for bragging and a representation of power in Xiling.
If it wasn’t to deal with the situation at Xiling, why would General Hei Yu himself sit at the commander position for ten or so years? With the amount of experience he had, he could be hired in the Imperial Palace a long time ago.
But again, if there was no direct evidence of rebellion from the Xiling Menfa, the Imperial Court soldiers would not dare to charge in so easily either.
With such injuries that Zhen Yujiang attained, it was possible that he would make a decision before thinking and cause some problems.
Now that Qin Xiao has calmed down, he didn’t stay any longer and quickly returned to Wood Street.
On the way, there was only one question in his mind: Who saved Meng Zimo? Where is he now?
If it wasn’t for that person who appeared tonight, Meng Zimo would have long died.
Saving Meng Zimo away under the eyes of so many people meant that he was probably very strong.
When he returned to Wood Street, Zhen Yujiang had already got his wounds wrapped by the people at Unlimited Happiness. Then someone called a carriage and sent him back to the Manor of Marquess Zhen.
Everyone knew Zhen Yujiang must not die at this building.
That was because after the Xiling Menfa made a compromise with the Imperial Court, they must send a child to the Capital. The Marquess sent his eldest son and kept his second son with him. This proved that the Marquess loved his second son more than anything.
If the Marquess’ beloved son died at Unlimited Happiness, it would be a disaster for everyone who worked there.
