Fatal Counterattack - Chapter 3: Murder
Ju was surprised by Zhang Zichen’s abrupt movement as he almost dropped the cash they got on the ground. If it wasn’t because they have been good pals for years, he would have thought Zichen came for the cash.
“Are you crazy?” Ju was so surprised that he didn’t know what to say for a second. After realizing what was going on, he spoke a few words before being stopped by Zhang Zichen’s glare.
Zhang Zichen lowered his voice, dragged Ju’s arm, tried his best to run on grass, and dashed towards Piedmont Avenue.
“There are only eleven people on the ground…”
“What?!” With that, Ju pulled his arm from Zhang Zichen, held tight on the cash in his hand, and started running like a stray dog. He quickly passed Zhang Zichen, leaving him behind in an instant.
Zhang Zichen cursed and tried his best to cover for Ju as he also sped up. While running, he also listened to his surroundings.
Sure enough, just after the two started running, there were sounds coming from behind them.
Tap, tap tap.
Zhang Zichen immediately realized that someone was following them, and this person was fast. Just after a few steps, the person was only a hundred meters away from them.
“Stop running!” A thundering voice came from behind them.
“Shit, what was that?” Ever since the fight started, Ju had been extremely nervous and hyped. Sweat ran down the back of his neck as he was suddenly frightened by the yell.
I need to do something. Zhang Zichen quickly began looking for a solution. Suddenly, he raised his head. He got a plan.
“Whatever happens, don’t say anything!” Zhang Zichen said with a low voice after speeding up and being only a few steps behind Ju.
When passing a big tree by the road, Zhang Zichen quickly picked up his foot and kicked Ju into a ditch onto the side.
During such an emergency, Ju indeed didn’t dare to say another word. After being kicked, he rolled into the ditch and no sound came out after that. Zhang Zichen sighed. But during that sigh, he suddenly tripped onto something and landed head first onto the ground. The rest of his body also started rolling due to the momentum.
Puff!
Zhang Zichen felt as if every bone in his body were falling apart. His face was burning and all the air got forced out of his chest. He lied on his back and gasped for air when a shadow appeared from behind and pressed on top of him.
“Try to keep running now!”
Zhang Zichen didn’t have time to resist at all, and he didn’t have the energy to resist either. He was flipped over by the man and a knee aggressively pressed onto his back.
“Ouch… it hurts…”
A side of Zhang Zichen’s face was against the dirt and there were scratches all over his body, but that didn’t stop him from thinking.
Before approaching the bodies, I was hiding with Ju the whole time. No one could have seen us. After we got out, we didn’t talk too loud and when I was beside the first body, I didn’t notice anything either.
But right now, I’m pinned onto the ground, and what’s worse, I don’t even know when he became conscious. Was he pretending to be unconscious or did he actually just got up? What did he see us? Did he see that there were two people running away from him?
Shit.
Zhang Zichen cursed in his head.
Looks like I have been living too good of life these days and lost my alertness. Thankfully, we only took some money. He won’t do too much to me. The worst that will happen is probably getting beat. At least one of us got away.
While he was thinking, he suddenly felt a chill on his wrist, and then crack, a crisp sound came into his ears.
Huh?
Zhang Zichen touched the thing on his wrist, then looked back and his expression instantly changed.
A white badge on the hat shone under the moonlight.
“I told you to stop! What are you running for? Try to run now!”
A strong voice came from behind Zhang Zichen to his side. The police ordered his shirt, patted the dirt off, straightened his hat, and then took something out of his pockets.
Flash!
A strong beam of light suddenly lit up in front of him and blinded Zhang Zichen’s eyes.
Although he didn’t know what happened, he knew that at least he didn’t have to beat now. Zhang Zichen looked up at the police standing next to him and found him looking at where the flashlight was pointing about three meters away.
“Group one, group one, I’m Cheng, I’m Cheng. Look for the flashlight and come here! There’s an emergency here! I repeat, there’s an emergency here!”
The policeman named Cheng was dumbfounded for a moment before quickly taking out the walkie-talkie and screaming at it. After finishing, he immediately ran towards where the flashlight was pointing.
Zhang Zichen’s eyes followed the policeman inch by inch until the policeman reached where the flashlight was pointing at.
There was another person lying there, but there was also a dagger behind the person’s back.
“Damn it, now it’s real trouble…” Even though Zhang Zichen tried to stay calm, he couldn’t help but curse out loud.
