“Yes.”
Xie Wanying was very affirmative. Just like her senior sister, she was determined to work hard to stay at the National Association of Medicine.
Last night, the performance of the National Association teachers had left a profound impression on her. As medical students, who wouldn’t want to graduate and work at the best hospital with the best colleagues, all working and striving together?
In the morning, she watched the snow, had lunch at the school cafeteria, and took her friend for a stroll around the medical school.
She returned to her room for a nap. When Xie Wanying woke up, she found her friend still asleep, so she picked up a medical textbook and started reading.
One by one, clinical seniors called to console her – Dr. Lin, Dr. Jin, and even Dr. Jiang, who had returned.
Dr. Jiang had it the toughest; she heard that she had only returned to the hospital around three or four in the morning. She had been coordinating emergency response on-site and had brought back a very critical patient.
After Dr. Jiang learned about her injury and knew she was resting, she called in the afternoon to inquire about her condition.
“I’m fine, Dr. Jiang.”
“Rest well, and make sure you take the medication your senior prescribed for you.”
“I will, Dr.”
“If you need anything, don’t hesitate to call me.” Finally, Dr. Jiang praised her, “Our hospital even allows you to perform punctures on the robot, which shows your potential as a surgeon.”
Xie Wanying listened to the teacher’s praise cautiously, being careful not to become complacent. The lesson she had learned from Professor Fu last night was etched in her memory.
After answering a few phone calls, she looked up and saw that it was around three or four in the afternoon. Her friend was still curled up in bed.
Xie Wanying sensed that something was amiss and hurried over to check her friend’s forehead: she had a fever!
“I thought it was just a sore throat and nothing more. I was planning to sleep it off,” Wu Lixuan said, opening her eyes and apologising. “I’m sorry.”
“Why are you apologising to me? Didn’t you say that if you were sick, you’d come to me?” Xie Wanying scolded her for not speaking up when she wasn’t feeling well.
“Yes!” Wu Lixuan remembered what she had said and nodded.
Xie Wanying helped her put on warm clothes and said, “Come on, I’ll take you to the emergency room at our hospital. Your tonsils are acutely inflamed, and we don’t want them to get worse or become abscessed. You need to get a shot quickly.”
Wu Lixuan didn’t expect her condition to be severe and was surprised. She asked, “Why is it so serious that I need an injection? Isn’t it just a sore throat?”
“If it’s severe, it can get to the point where you can’t eat anything because of the pain,” Xie Wanying explained with some medical knowledge, trying to “scare” her friend into taking it seriously.
The two of them arrived at the emergency room. Since it was during the day, Dr. Jiang, Dr. Lin, and Dr. Jin, who were probably on the night shift, must have gone off duty.
Xie Wanying went to the nurse’s station to seek help from the nurses.
The nurse told her, “Today, there are several doctors on duty, including your classmate.”
Was Zhao Zhaowei there? Wasn’t he on the night shift just like her?
“It’s someone named Li Qi’an.” Because of her relationship, the nurses were paying close attention to her classmates in her class now.
It turned out that Li Qi’an had been doing an internship in the emergency room today, under the guidance of Dr. Jiang from the Gastroenterology Department.
Hearing that her classmate was here, Li Qi’an hurried to the nurse’s station and met Xie Wanying, who chattered, “We’ve all been talking about Zhao Zhaowei. They say he’s a chubby guy and won’t make a good cushion for patients. They let a skinny person like you escort patients in the backseat. Is he foolish or what?”
This was definitely an unexpected outcome for Zhao Zhaowei. He had thought his classmates would tease him for being nearsighted, but it turned out they were making fun of his lack of intelligence and inability to serve as a cushion.
“He’s not chubby,” Xie Wanying defended Zhao Zhaowei for a couple of sentences.
“Let it go. He’s at least several dozen pounds heavier than you. He’s 1.75 metres tall.”
